Old Skool Team Championship Introduction
The National Banger Old Skool Team Championship returns to Mildenhall on September 19 as part of RDC's annual No Hype Needed and is sure to be an event no banger fan will miss.

Based on the format used in the team championships at Crayford in the 1970s and early 1980s, the head to head heats are guaranteed to provide plenty of action as the six man teams battle it out for a place in the main event and with so much at stake in the Grand Final, this will be an explosive affair.

Last year's event saw RDC announce some small but very important changes to the Old Skool team championship and this year we will see 12 teams of eight in action rather than the traditional 14 teams of six. Although this will mean one less head to head qualifying heat we are hopeful the larger teams will mean a better quality of action in these races. Furthermore we believe a final of six teams of up to eight cars rather than eight teams of up to six cars will provide better action. Finally with the team who wins the consolation no longer advancing to the final it will take the event closer to the original format which is mentioned above.

In order to fairly pick the teams for this year's event the newly introduced RDC team championship series points were used after the five current RDC team champions where first offered a place the remaining spaces were offered to the teams which had scored the most from the 2008 Old Skool to the more recent 2009 Kent team championship.

We are delighted to report that with the exception of Kent team champions the Management (who had already agreed to race with the Dover Boys) every team offered an invitation readily accepted and we believe the line up is perhaps the best in Old Skool history.

As always this section of the site is dedicated to giving you everything you need to know about this meeting so either use the quick links to find the information you need or scroll down to enjoy the entire section. If there is any information you cannot find then please contact us through the usual channels, which can be found under general meeting information and contact details.

Old Skool Team Championship Rules
The National Banger Old Skool Team Championship features a unique format unlike any other currently used in the sport of banger racing.

The format mirrors one formerly used at Crayford Stadium several decades ago and was resurrected by RDC for this meeting which is about to embark on its seventh successful year.

Once again 12 teams have booked their place for the team event but they all realise that overall victory will not be easy.

Before the start of the meeting the team captains will be present for the random drawing for the qualifying heats. This will pit the 12 teams into six head to heads where victory will secure them a place in the all important Grand Final.

The draw will have a massive impact on the meeting as not only will the teams be eager to be pitted against a team they believe they can topple but the earlier a heat they contest the more time they will have to repair for the final.

The final will feature all six victorious teams and again the squads will work hard to repair as many cars as possible for the all important battle in and once again it will be winner takes all.

Victory in the heats and final can be achieved in one of two ways
1. One of the team completes the race distance and takes the chequered flag
2. The race goes to the last car or team running

Following controversy in the final at the 2005 event each of the the races will carry a time limit. If the time limit expires before the race distance is completed or there is a clear cut last team running then the drivers who has completed the most laps will win for their team.

TEAM PREVIEW

The first of the 12 teams taking part in this year's Old Skool are no strangers to this event in the shape of the hard hitting and always action packed Aftermath who have been on a tear in 2009 with the team bouncing back to top form. They will be hoping this form carries through to the Old Skool where they will be aiming to at least make the final this year having been on the losing end to the Predators 12 months ago in one of the highlights of the qualifying heats. This years Math team is perhaps the best all round team we have ever seen from them. We still have the big hitters in the likes of 391 Ol Matey, 400 Shinny, 602 Mr Moody and 604 the Younger Cooper but new additions, 415 Scott Cornish (who has won an Old Skool heat in the past), 417 Dan Davey, world champion 515 Flats and 603 the Younger Hitmen are also very capable of putting the laps in as well as getting their hands dirty when needed. And Shinny more than proved his racing abilities with a fine display at the recent Brandon Bowl at Coventry. Certainly no team will relish the prospect of being drawn against them in the heats as win or lose there are going to be casualties and even if a team is able to get past them it is unlikely the will bring all eight cars to the final. Their pit work will also make them contenders as they will put in maximum effort to get all their cars back out for the final. Should they make it to the main event they are guaranteed to inject plenty of action into the race although chances are they won't have the most complicated of game plans, most likely to try and turn the event into a destruction derby and be there at the end.

With Dave Stone taking a back seat this season the Allstars has a very different look this year with 21 Jason Colbert at the helm the team is pretty much a Bad News oitfit in disguise. But that's not necessarily a bad thing as the Bad News boys have been involved in some of the best Old Skool head to heads over the years, their encounter with the Beck Row Bandits still regarded as one of the best head to heads at this event while their clash with the Lean Team 12 months ago was a brutal, hard hitting affair. But despite all their efforts they have rarely been rewarded with success at the Old Skool and their head to head heat success isn't the greatest. Despite this they are another team no one will want to be drawn against as they will show no fear to their opposition and willl give it their best regardless of their opponents which means they are bound to take casualties with them. The aforementioned Colbert, 192 Terry Nightingale, 277 Des Owen, 280 Slick, 291 Jay Giddings and 313 Cully are likely to be concentrating on the crashing side of the campaign, the latter engaging in a monster head-on with 400 Shinny at a recent Old Skool while Owen always impresses on his rare outings which are always welcome and he was most lively for Cambridge at the Inter Counties session in June. Completing the equation are 236 Robo and 321 Andy Newton who may be their best bet for the laps but the chances are this team will look to make their event resemble a DD as this will be where their strength lies. Not a team which starts the night as favourites but their heat is bound to be one to watch and they will be entertaining if they make the final. Come what may, they will enjoy the night regardless.

The Beck Row Bandits are the first of two teams to be two time winners of the event and they start the night as serious contenders to add another title to their impressive CV. They have a very impressive record in the head to head heats only having lost to the Condoms and Six Bolt in previous years although last year's defeat was compensated when they won the consolation and came so close to also winning the grand final. Former world champion 22 Dave Vincent, 67 Sparky, British champion 119 Cruncher, track champion 125 Hitler and the vastly underrated 318 Shifty are no strangers to racing for the Bandits at this event and all five thrive in team racing environments which always seem to bring out the very best in them. This isn't to mention that all five are more than capable when it comes to racing and crashing and are five of the sports top all round talents who with a bit of thinking and a game plan are hard to top. Former multiple champion 348 Mushy makes a welcome return to the squad and making their debut in the team are former British champion 57 Dino and rated young gun 349 Michael Allard who are also likely to be very much at home here. It's another rare but most welcome appearence for the former who is something of a team race specialist and his inclusion could be a master stroke by the team while in Allard they have another top drawer performer. Certain to be favourites at making it a hat trick if they make the final and there might only be a couple of teams capable of beating them in the heats.

It seems somewhat hard to believe that it is less than 12 months since the Common Crushers made their debut at an RDC team event, first appearing at the snow struck 2litre team session in November where they made an immediate impact. Followed by typically entertaining performances at the 1400cc Suffolk Open and 2Litre Kent team championships has led to their Old Skool debut where their presence is proving a big talking point of the event. As with the previous team events at RDC it might be the Crushers in name and the Crushers in paint scheme but a close look reveals a strong Stinkbridge theme to the line up and in the case of their Old Skool outfit it's an almost 50/50 split which is by no means unfair as 51 Simon Heilds. 450 Glyn Platts and 455 Ricky Finney have helped the Crushers in their campaign to get this far. And that isn't to mention that they are three of the biggest entertainers and top hitters in the sport. Joining them from the Stinkbridge ranks is another former Crusher in the shape of the vastly under rated 742 Taz who has also impressed at Mildenhall numerous times in the past. Meanwhile from the Common Crusher ranks comes the rated young gun duo of 60 Shaky Jnr and 70 Ant Long who over the last 18 months have come on in leaps and bounds and they are joined by the under rated 844 Hag who is also very capable of impressing on the crashing front. Certainly a team with more intent on wrecking than completing the laps here and another squad which few , if any, team in the pits will want to be pitted against in the heats. Another team which will prove very hard to beat in the heats although their desire to crash rather than race might possibly leave them vulnerable. Also bound to inject plenty of action into the final should they make it as destruction could well be their best chance of overal victory.

2009 has seen a brand new look for the Dover Boys and while they have made the final at both of the RDC team meetings so far in 2009 although there has been no major success for the two time Kent team champions since making that stage. Another team which has enjoyed much success at the Old Skool in the past with only defeats to the Condoms and Bandits to note over the years and there is cerainly no shame in coming up short against either of those teams and a consolation win means they have only failed to make the final once in this event. It is a very cosmopolitan line up for this years squad which at least has more of a Kent influence than the team did on home soil in August. Supreme champion 188 Victor, 465 Andy Scarlett and 898 Andy Battle are the most regular members of the team while Clangers 20 Baldy and 81 NumbNuts make their debut in the squad. 346 Muttley and 349 Finbarr are of course more known for their efforts with the Management but were both part of the team on good Friday before helping their team win the Kent titles last month. Finally comes unlimited Suffolk Open champion 148 Shorty who will be hoping for muc greater success than his Dover Boys debut last November. Another very strong team on paper and a great mix of crashers and wreckers who could become favourites should they make the final. Their only stumbling block could be if they are drawn against one of the hard hitting teams in the heats as they might not have the fire power to overcome some of the big crashing teams.

Defending the titles this season are the Gypsy Crew who like the Bandits will be gunning for a record breaking third victory in the event. Certainly found themselves in the right place at the right time 12 months ago where despite having a bad start 488 Duane Collins recovered and made the most of every other front runner being wiped out to claw his way back to the front and take the flag. The Gypsy Crew are the only team among this year's 12 with a perfect record in the head to head heats although it could be argued that they are yet to be drawn against one of the big hitting teams in the Old Skool. Nonetheless this is a proud record which only a couple of teams can lay claim to and it will be something they will not give up without a fight. The Crew is another side which has enjoyed many line up changes over the years and again this squad boasts some regular, former and new names to the mix but it is another quality side which should not be discounted as their past record proves. Certainly it is 85 James Ellis who of the eight is enjoying the best form this season, his switch to TSR quickly saw him become one of the leading names at King;s Lynn leading both the track championship and entertainers league. Stable mates 132 Bobbles and 285 Mr Misery have also enjoyed their best form to date, the former's star really rising in new surroundings this season. They are joined by Gypsy regulars 41 Loopy Lee and 273 Mad Mouse who are both more than familiar on the crashing front while 370 Mark French, 407 Ricky O'Neil and 183 Bobby Wilmer are promising additions to the squad, capable of making a difference where it counts, certainly the latter whose return to action has been one of the success stories of the season.

It's been a few seasons since we have seen the Midnight Runners in action at the Old Skool but they return in impressive fashion with a team, which on paper makes them many people's favourites and it's no exaggeration to say that perhaps this could be the team no-one will want to be drawn against at that should they fail to make the final, it would be a serious upset, regardless of who they are drawn against. But nonetheless despite their strength they will still be wary of the draw as the severity of their head to head could have a serious impact on their chances in the all important grand final where they are another who would make a huge impact on the main event, should they get that far. The team has undergone a serious transformation in the last 12 to 18 months and has gone from a PRI based team to one of the sports super powers with leading drivers from across the country now flying the flag. In fact the PRI influence is not perhaps in the minority of the team and with 208 the Finger racing more for Autospeed this season it only leaves rated young gun 88 Splosh as a true PRI representative and he has rarely been seen on home turf this season. They are joined by two of the sports finest at present 190 Pikey and 730 Deano, 239 Nemesis, who much like the Finger is one of the most improved drivers of 2009. 158 Shane Davies is a surprise guest and adds even more quality to this superb looking squad. RDC's 180 Sparky and Spedeworth's 514 Marty have proved impressive additions to the team this year as well and complete again what many consider to be the strongest team on paper for this event. Certainly going to be hard to beat in the heats but possibly going to be a target in the final which could be their only downfall as surely every other team will quickly recognise that if they want to win, it's the Runners they need to stop.

Making their second appearance at the Old Skool is the legendary name of the Motley Krew who will certainly be hoping for better fortune that their debut outing 12 months ago when they fell to the Dover Boys in the qualifying heats. They are bound to start the evening more determined to at least make it past the first stage and the truth is that this team is far from a push over and more than capable of giving any team in the pits a run for their money in the head to heads and win or lose their head to head heat is bound to be one to watch. Much like last year the team is a mix of the Krew and Barton Boys, another rated team from over the years and on numerous occasions we have seen these two teams joins forces under the name of one or the other including last August when they raised the final Krash Kings title, under the Barton banner. Looking at the Motley regulars and we have to start with the ever rated 311 Helm who will be very much at home here and on the heels of his vintage performance at the Kent teams last month, where the Krew were front runners until the final stages, many will be hoping for more of the same this year. 320 Smiler and 170 Darren Teal are the more longer serving members of the team these days and will both be very much up for this as the crash happy nature event of the year will be well suited to these two under rated entertainers. Finally from the Krew faction come rising stars 46 Pecker and 210 Slim. The former had precious little luck on his old skool debut last year but both could be drivers to watch here as they will be very keen to make an impact. Finally from the Barton stable, 179 Cool makes another appearance in the red, white and orange and despite cutting back on his appearances these days he remains one of the finest who will be a danger man here and if the team make the final he could be the team's best chance of taking the win should the event go the distance. Beyond that 69 Copey and 185 Len Smith make rare outings and also bring much experience to a team with more than enough potential and ability to go far here but could benefit from the final going into a destruction derby rather than being a speed race.

While 2009 has been a quieter year on the whole for the Predators, last year was an unforgetable year for the team where they raised the first ever RDC Team Championship and were also named team of the year at the first annual Wasted Magazine Awards Night. Many would suggest that last year's Old Skool debut was one of the highlights of the year and that is perhaps little surprise given that the format of the meeting is very much their cup of tea.and after an impressive victory over the Aftermath in their heat they came very close to taking the title with an impressive performance in the final. While we have not seen as much of the team as we would have liked in 2009 this is still a very impressive looking squadron whose strength very much lies in the crashing side of the sport which will make them yet another team few will fancy being pitted against in the heats as once again, win or lose they are going to leave casualties. Despite cutting back on his appearances in recent months, 157 Piglet was one of the leading entertainers at Mildenhall at the start of the year and was most impressive earlier this month when the team visited Smallfield. You can always guarantee that 79 Twelly, 176 Gibo, 296 Brat, 404 Spook and 879 Wrecked Reg will be at the heart of the action as crashing is very much the name of their game and whenever they are on track they are always bound to inject much action into proceedings. 401 Psycho remains one of the leading entertainers at RDC and last year's Old Skool was a highlight for him with a dynamite performance where he came so close to winning the title race and should the team advance to the final don't be against him making an impact once agaim.192 Fat Head makes another guest appearance and is almost always usual on both the crashing and wrecking front. A team to be feared in the head to head heats and another team whose heat you will not want to miss and another team to watch should they make the final but the heavier that race turns out to be, the better their chance.

Team Green is a side which in a very short space of time has made a very big impact on the RDC team scene, storming to victory in the awful conditions at the 2Litre Mildenhall team championship last November to earn a debut at this years Old Skool before also impressing on Good Friday by making the final six at the Suffolk Open team championship. It cannot be argued that the team is far from better off without 617 Jack Overy and 682 Paul Sparrow who have sadly had to withdraw from the event but this is still a strong looking squad which boasts a large percentage of the excellent young rising talent from RDC,many of which are making their Old Skool debut this year. Certainly regular team members 86 Alec Savage and 370 John Cobbold are two of RDC's finest young guns who have consistently found themselves near the top of the Mildenhall points and neither are afraid or unable to mix it on the crashing front. 17 the Little Chief made an instant impact from graduating from the Ministox ranks and in time at all had many of the banger racing world talking about his potential and this fearless young gun is bound to be one to watch here. 382 Jack Foster Jnr has also graduated from the RDC Ministox this season and while his banger career didn't enjoy the best of starts he has quickly made up ground and is rapidly establishing himself as the rated young gun many believe he has the ability to be and this will be a big proving ground for him where he will be keen to impress. Sticking to the theme of Ministox graduates and 2009 has been a breakout season for 362 Tilly whose star has shone with a number of superb full contact performances both at Mildenhall and elsewhere and he is another likely to be very well suited to this format. Another Ministox graduate is 371 Jason Cobbold, arguably one of RDC's finest Ministox talents in the last 10 years and despite only making the occasional banger outing he rarely doesn't feature and is another underrated all round performer. Completing the squad are the very experienced pairing of 159 Darren Scarrow and 801 Jack Foster who are both no stranger to this event. The latter took the flag for the Dover Boys against the Motley Krew 12 months ago while Scarrow has competed at almost every Old Skool to date and it is a meeting which tends to bring out his best. 2009 has been a fine year for this underrated star and don't be surprised if he impresses here. While this a fine all round team of racers and wreckers as well as young blood and experience, they might lack the fire power to overcome one of the big hard hitting teams if they are drawn against them in the heats although they have the potential to beat anyone on the line up and are more than capable of giving any team a hard time but they are guaranteed to be a squad to watch should they make the final.

Making a welcome return to the Old Skool line up this season is former 2Litre Mildenhall team champions Team Flash who after suffering something of a difficult year in team strength last season is enjoying a return to form in 2009 which almost saw them win the Kent team title last month. With such a strong line up for this year's Old Skool it is somewhat wrong to single out any team as under dogs but on paper at least you could perhaps argue that this side will start the evening as dark horses. However we said the exact thing about the Essex team in the Inter Counties team challenge in June and they came within an eyelash of taking the win and three of the Essex team appear here which speaks volumes. They might need a slice of luck in the draws and avoid one or two of the big favourites in the head to head heats but they have all the needed tools to make it to the final where should they make it they will start the event with just as much of a chance as any other on the grid. Count them out at your peril as chances are they will thrive in the role of under dogs and start even more determined to upset the form book. 61 Flash once again spear heads the team and remains one of RDC's most experienced performers who has enjoyed some fine meetings this year including a killer full contact performance at the season opener. The addition of rated new RDC signings 122 Woodsy and 128 Shippy proved a master stroke for the Kent teams and these two are quickly establishing a great reputation at RDC, the latter one of the stars of the unlimited Suffolk open this summer and they will both be out to impress here. 388 Emmo is another experienced racer whose efforts for the team have been vital over the years and he has plenty of Old Skool experience to boot while 425 Mr Vauxhall is a welcome addition to the team. One of RDC's most dedicated performers over recent years he could be a solid bet to challenge for the win should they make the final. Finally come WI Engineering team mates 262 the Verger and 587 Humps, who are also among the impressive ranks of RDC's underrated racers whose efforts for Team Essex in June where vital and they are also very capable of great things on their day. Should all eight be firing on all cylinders, they will be a team to watch.

Completing the bill are Team Kamikaze which is another team which despite always having the potential is yet to deliver at the Old Skool and always seems to come up a little short. However there is no doubting that this is the strongest team we have seen at the Old Skool from this stable and once again this impressive all round side is another team few will fancy being paired against and their heat is likely to be another explosive affair. This year's team could be labelled Team Kamikaze International with the addition of highly rated Irish pilot 173 Hot Socks who many rate as the leading name to have come from across the Irish sea in the last decade and his frequent trips to these shores have rarely not been impressed. It is great to finally see him heading for Mildenhall and this format is bound to be very much to the liking of the Team Savage racer who will leave nothing behind as he looks to impress for the team. Certainly he is one to watch here. 117 Kamikaze, 199 Jason Dack, 217 the Mad Irishman and 278 Sex Pest and all regulars in the team now and were all present at last year's Old Skool where they were all well involved. Kamikaze remains one of the leading entertainers on the RDC scene but never seems to have the luck at this one and will be more eager than ever to put that right in 2009. Joining this quartet of Kamiakze regulars are three of the sports finest at the moment in the shape of rated Spedeworth trio 247 Bro, 439 Sutty and 741 Capt D who certainly inject a big dose of quality into this team and could prove the difference needed for this team to suceed. Certainly the mixture of these three and Kamikaze as Team Norfolk almost proved a winning cmobination in June so who would bet against the same here. English champion Bro has been one of the stars of the season and has regularly shone at Mildenhall this year while Sutty and Capt D are now legit main event stars whereever they perform and they will all be a danger here, especially if they make the final.

PostSubject: Re: Mildenhall old skool teams   Wed Sep 16, 2009 3:43 pm

We are now just days away from one of the highlights of the year at RDC with RDC's annual No Hype Needed headlined by one of the hardest hitting banger events of the year, the National Banger Old Skool team championship

Ever since the changes to the traditional Old Skool format were announced at last year's meeting, people have been talking about the event and the impact of those changes will finally be known this weekend. Many hope the increase to eight man teams will produce better quality head to head heats and the prospect of six teams of eight, rather than eight teams of six, might make for a better final although the downside is this year will se just six head to heads rather than seven and there is now no last chance place in the final available to the winner of the consolation and it remains to be seen if that has a positive or negative effect on that race.

In the meantime the tweak to the format means this years Old Skool is the first to be an invite only affair with the top teams from RDC's team events over the previous 12 months being extended an invite to compete and we are delighted to report that all 12 teams taking part are the first 12 teams to be extended an invite and so no teams turned down the offer to compete which once again highlights how highly this meeting is rated by drivers and teams.

And better yet is that many regard this year's Old Skool team championship line up as the best one yet, not only in terms of the teams on the entry list but also with the drivers within them, Almost every big name from RDC can be found on the list and there are also many of the sports leading names from around the country, and for the first time Ireland in the shape of 173 Steve Reynolds, heading for Mildenhall this weekend for this big event.

While there are certainly some teams who on paper jump out as favourites there is no escaping the fact that all of the 12 teams have the potential to win this event as each side boasts quality names and even those considered under dogs on paper have the ability to take the title should they get the luck on the day. Furthermore while many fans will be hoping the pre meeting draw produces at least one, maybe two, dream head to heads in the heats pitting two of the top teams against one another, it can be argued that there isn't the prospect of a bad head to head there as none of the 12 teams are likely to give up their chance of competing in the final. And what a mouth watering prospect the final is with six top teams and up to 48 cars doing battle for one of the sports biggest team titles.

As the event takes the name of one of RDC's mottos, No Hype Needed, there isn;t much more we can say. For more be sure to check out our dedicated No Hype Needed section of the site which includes some late changes for Team Green, Gypsy Crew, Predators and Motley Krew plus our massive team by team preview as well as all the other information and facts you might about this event and also the official meeting preview can be found on our previews page.

Supporting the bangers are the Reliant Robins in their second biggest meeting of the year, the British Championship and despite this the meeting still is available to fans at RDC's fantastic big meeting admission price of just £12 for adults. As always there are no hidden costs at RDC with programme and car parking all included and the whole family can take advantage of our great value for money family ticket which gets any two adults and any four concessions (under 14s or OAPs) in for just £29. We all know there is a resection, that money is tight for everyone and that fuel is far too expensive but we hope our admission prices means that the whole family can still come and enjoy what promises to be a great evening of contact racing this weekend at Mildenhall.
