Size matters this weekend (Saturday, July 11) at Mildenhall Stadium and bigger will definitely be better as the unlimited bangers roll into the pits for the annual Suffolk Open Championship.
This weekend's meeting is just one of two chances this season for the banger drivers to race unlimited cc cars on the Suffolk shaleway which will mean the pit area will be packed full of the larger type of bangers with Ford Granadas, Volvos and Jaguars sure to be the most popular cars on display but there is also bound to be much more impressive machinery as well including American Yank Tanks, limos, hearses and classic British and Japanese cars as well.
Last year's Suffolk Open championship attracted the biggest field of unlimited bangers seen anywhere in Europe throughout 2008 and many fans labelled it the best meeting in the sport last season with the majority of races proving huge levels of action and destruction all the way around the raceway.
And the signs are that this year's meeting could be just as successful as with a week to go before the big night over 130 drivers are booked in to attend. It remains to be seen if last year's near 160 car field can be toppled but either way a mightily impressive entry is expected including several of the sports biggest stars.
Defending the championship is Mendips Raceway top star Martin Dalton (58) who isn't likely to be the only west country based driver in attendance with the likes of reigning Mildenhall Accumulator champion Steve Bailey (190), former English champion Andy Jones (341) and rising young superstar Sam Trim (363) all expected to appear. From the opposite end of the country Jim Dillon (152) will lead his team mates in the Mob from Scotland back to Suffolk for their third trip to the raceway this season and for their debut at this event. This team is known for regularly racing impressive machinery and few would expect anything less from them here.
But there are plenty of others booked in to appear with a reputation for racing rare and exotic machinery. Having raced an Austin A135 Princess Ambulance and a Daimler Majestic Major limo the last two years Wisbech based material maestro Simon Reed (33!) is said to have another very impressive motor up his sleeve this season but we'll have to wait until this Saturday to see exactly what it is.
Beyond that the likes of Alan 'Speedy Reed (88) and Brian Cope (303) have often raced some stunning cars at Mildenhall and many are hopeful this trend will continue this weekend.
While many will enjoy the night for the cars and the action they supply it should not be forgotten that the meeting is still another round of the Mildenhall track and RDC Drivers Points Championships. The current top 10s include Supreme Champion John Reeves (188), triple world champion Jack Overy (617), Barry Lee (64), Andy Burbridge (20), John Cobbold (370)-a heat winner last year and Mark Whittaker (67) who will be among those to watch.
Other big names booked in for action include the likes of former world champions Dave Vincent (22), Davey Cox (119) and Wayne Cotterill Jnr (998), last year's runner up Steve Moore (39), King of the Fens Ian Redden (148), former Crasharama champion John Golden (384), established entertainers like Ricky Twell (79), Shaun Rushton (179), John Wibberly (252), Lee Bradbury (311) and Steve Hemmings (401), former World Cup Champion Dean French (269) and former unlimited Terminator champion Matt Threkeld (474).
Another budding star worth keeping an eye on is Kyle Overy (17) as the latest in this famous banger racing family makes his unlimited banger debut fresh from being one of the biggest stars of the junior Ministox formula at the raceway in recent years.
Which brings us nicely to the second formula in action on the night, the 11 to 16 year old stars of the future in the Ministox as they do battle in their Suffolk Open Championship where Craig Banwell (328) starts the evening as defending champion.
Banwell was something of a surprising winner last year in an event which has a habit of throwing up unexpected names into the winners circle. So will we see a new star born this weekend or will one of the more established drivers triumph.
Leading the track championship battle so far in 2009 are Daniel Parker (306), Jordan Murray (302) and Sid Magewick (355) who are among the pre meeting favourites and are all chasing their maiden title wins in the formula.
Also featuring in the current top 10 at Mildenhall are Jo Parker (304), Thomas Fox (322), George Boult Jnr (356), Matt Noughton (366) and Bryson Walker (317) who will also start the event as contenders but don;t count out one of the visiting drivers walking away with the spoils as this championship meeting is open to all drivers from all promotions who will be keen to walk away with the silverware.
Banger and stockcar racing offers excitement, action and fun for all the family at an amazing price and this weekend is no different. Adult admission is just £12 and concessions (under 14s and OAPs) is just £5 and you can take advantage of the family tickets which admits any two adults and any four concessions for just £29 so there is no excuse to not bring the children or the grand parents along as well. And at Mildenhall Stadium there are no hidden costs in the admission prices with the race programme and car parking all included as well.
The first race is at the earlier than usual start time of 6.30pm with a grand parade of unlimited bangers from 6pm.

Hmm 3 heats,i can see 4 to be honest but if there were to be 3 that would be around 40 cars per heat based on the 130 car theory.
