PostSubject: Re: Mildenhall suffolk open   Tue Jul 01, 2008 10:33 pm

Those of you who visited the site to check out the report of last weekends Mildenhall meeting may have noticed the latest bookings had been added to our entry list for the Unlimited Banger Suffolk Open Championship at Mildenhall on July 12.

These latest entries pushed the current total past the 100 car mark and we have some more bookings added on today's update which now takes the total towards the 120 car mark despite a couple of cancellations being received in the last couple of days.

But the big news this week is that after his much talked about return to action at the pre 70 former World and Supreme Champion 88 Alan ‘Speedy’ Reed has booked in for another meeting and while the car he intends to race won’t challenge for the car of the meeting award it is likely to bring back great memories for many.

Last years Suffolk Open was one of just four unlimited banger meetings in the country to attract a triple figure entry and hopes are high that the feat will be repeated again in 2008

Mildenhall Stadium
Saturday July 12 2008
RDC's Big Night Out
Unlimited Bangers £1,000 Suffolk Open Championship (track championship round 13) and Ministox Suffolk Open Championship (track championship round 6)

Admission prices: Adults £11 Concessions £5 Family £27 (2 adults and up to four concessions). Admission includes car parking and programme

The age old saying that size matters and bigger is better will certainly be the case this Saturday night (July 12) at Mildenhall Stadium, West Row, Suffolk as the stadium plays host to a big night of big banger racing and the annual unlimited banger Suffolk Open Championship.

With a week to go to the big night over 120 banger drivers are currently booked in for the evening with drivers from all across the country set to head to the raceway for the event which is now regarded as one of the top banger events anywhere in the country and one of the few unlimited cc banger meetings in the sport which regularly attracts a triple figure entry of cars.

And the unlimited cc tag, truly means that as for one night only on the Suffolk shaleway the drivers are not only permitted but encouraged to find the biggest and baddest cars they possibly can and this one has a reputation for delivering some stunning cars and this year should be no different with the promise of some exceptional cars including limos, hearses, American Yank tanks, Rolls Royces, Jaguars, Rovers, classic Austins and much much more.

This is one of the few meetings of the year where the emphasis of the night isn't always on the race winners and in many ways the night isn't all about the crashers and entertainers but also about the quality of cars in the pits before hand so make sure you arrive in plenty of time before the start to ensure amble time to have a wander around the pit area before start time and to enjoy the grand parade of unlimited bangers at around 6.30pm, one final opportunity to see these wonderful cars before they go out in a true blaze of glory.

And if previous unlimited Suffolk Open championships at Mildenhall are anything to go by then there should be no shortage of action with recent events being not only rated as among the best banger events of the year at the Suffolk raceway but also among the best seen anywhere in the country.

Sadly the second half of last years event was spoiled by heavy rain but still the action came wich just a handful of the near 40 starters in the title race lasting the distance where Sittingbourne's Mark Millen (814) took a famous win in his classic Wolseley 6/110.

It's a star studded line up for this years meeting and the majority of the seasons track championship contenders are expected in action including series leader Lee Overy (125) from Beck Row alongside Mildenhall's Wayne Quinn (82), Andy Battle (898) from Saxmundham who is gunning for his third banger final win in four weeks, British Champion Sean Winchester (364) from Rainham, Supreme Champion Danny Sutton (439) from Yarmouth, rising star John Cobbold (370) from Colchester and Dover's John Reeves (188) who has thus far been one of the most committed banger races this season.

Another to watch out for must be former World Champion and local hero Dave Vincent (22) who has had a somewhat rotten season thus far and would love nothing more than to win this title to turn his year around and the unlimited format is certainly his favoured option when it comes to banger racing.

On the action front you can almost guarantee the Predators from Wisbech will be well involved as they return to Mildenhall after a series of hard hitting performances all around the country and they have assembled a very tasty line up of machinery for the big night, cars which they will be displaying at the annual Wisbech Steam Rally during the weekend, displaying the cars on Saturday afternoon before the meeting and then taking them back on the Sunday to show visitors what destruction they have inflicted.

They are not the only team expected to make an impact with the WI Engineering squad from Essex aiming to wield some stunning cars for the night and put them to good use.

Lots of visiting drivers are expected to make the trip including west country star Steve Bailey (190) who won the coveted most devastating driver award last year and few would bet against him winning that again in 2008.

Joining the bangers on the bill are the 11 to 16 year old stars of the future in the Ministox class and the young guns will also be racing for their Suffolk Open Championship, which is one of the biggest races of the season for the formula at the raceway and practically guarantees top action from these budding racers.

Last year's winner, Liam Friel (362) from London reached the formula's retirement age and is expected in action in the bangers this weekend leaving the door open for a new champion to be crowned.

Reigning RDC Drivers Champion Kyle Overy (370) from Mildenhall was the runner up last year and will be gunning to go one better while former Suffolk Open champion Wes Freestone (340) from King's Lynn will be looking to reclaim the title as he looks to extend his lead at the top of the track championship.

Currently second in the series is Jack Foster (382) from Newark who would love nothing more than to add another title to his growing collection as he attempts to reel in Freestone in the track championship race.

Other contenders include rising star Matt Noughton (366), former Suffolk Open Champion Craig Upson (381), final winner last month Jo Annison (314) and Thomas Parrin (350) who is another who has made great strides in the formula.

The first race is at 7pm with a grand parade of unlimited bangers at around 6.30pm.

Meeting format
(please note the meeting format is subject to change)

Meeting stars at 7pm. A grand parade of unlimited bangers is scheduled for around 6.30pm

Race One: Unlimited Bangers Heat One
Race Two: Unlimited Bangers Heat Two
Race Three: Unlimited Bangers Heat Three
Race Four: Ministox Heat One
Race Five: Ministox Heat Two
Race Six: Unlimited Bangers Consolation
Race Seven: Ministox Consolation
Race Eight: Unlimited Bangers Suffolk Open Championship (qualifiers only)

PostSubject: Re: Mildenhall suffolk open   Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:57 pm

We are now counting down the final days to one of the biggest banger meetings of the year at RDC and anywhere in the country as the unlimited banger Suffolk Open Championship headlines RDC’s Big Night Out at Mildenhall Stadium this weekend on Saturday, July 12.

Following the trend we have made this year of covering our big meetings we have once again assembled a collection of small news pieces regarding the event detailing all the stories and rumours going on.

The current entry list stands very close to the 130 car mark. Last year’s Suffolk Open was one of just four unlimited banger meetings to raise a triple figure entry and this trend looks set to continue this season but how will the final turn out compare to the sports other big unlimited turn outs. Already the Icebreaker at King’s Lynn and Barry Collins Memorial at Aldershot have seen 100 plus unlimiteds in action. Could these numbers be matched this weekend.

How much material will there be in the pits? Once again RDC have not revealed on this site the identity of any of the cars drivers plan to race but the talk is that plenty of drivers hope to have some impressive machinery for the night and this one rarely lets us down when it comes to rated tin.

With that in mind what does 33! Simon Reed have up his sleeve. Everyone knows his love of turning out the rarest cars just like his did last year with his Austin A135 Princess ambulance. Will this year’s car be just as impressive.

While the banger racing scene at RDC is not dominated by teams, one faction looking to make a bang is the hard hitting Predators team who plan to have a superb turnout of material for the night. It’s looking set to be a busy weekend for the team who will be displaying their cars in the Walpole St Andrew Steam Rally and Country Fare (between Sutton Bridge and King’s Lynn on the A17) at the weekend as well. The cars will be there on Saturday morning so visitors can get an early glimpse of their cars for the meeting and shortly after parading them in the main ring at around 12.15pm they will be loading up and heading to Mildenhall. Then on Sunday they will be taking the cars back to the rally to show visitors what they have done to them. RDC would once again like to thank them for this excellent effort which is set to be a great advert for the team, RDC and the sport. The fare raises money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance so please support this event if you can.

But can the WI Engineering team top the Predators in the most tooled up team stakes. The Essex based outfit certainly had the tin for the pre 70 in May and have some ambitious plans for later this season concerning the Hednesford pre 68 and Ipswich Gala Night but what treat do they have this weekend.

What car does Pikey (190 Steve Bailey) have?

Will we see multiple Rolls Royce’s this year? As many as three have been rumoured while some believe one of them could be extra special.

The Mildenhall unlimited has something of a habit of producing more classic Rovers than any other unlimited meeting in the sport. Will this trend continue in 2008? Many drivers have spoken that they intend to race cars fitting this description but could it be possible that P4s might outnumber P5s for the first time. And what about the outrageous rumour of a seriously rated and rare P5 taking to the track. Surely that couldn’t be true? Could it?

Speaking of the Predators. They have a message to deliver this Saturday night. A message which will send shockwaves throughout the sport and have everyone talking. But what is it?

After the supposed one off return of material man 88 Speedy Reed it seems the former World Champion has the bug again and is booked in to return this weekend and has promised a car which won’t compete for car of the meeting but will bring back many memories for long time fans.

Is anyone else excited about the prospect of the likes of 22 Dave Vincent, 125 Lee Overy and 364 Sean Winchester in RWD drive cars again around the Mildenhall shaleway. For many this weekend is all about the cars and the wrecking but there should be some great sideways racing to be found as well.

Several speculate a surprise turn out from the Gladiators? Is this going to be the case and if so, how many of them will turn out?

Keep an eye on the track championship contenders as well this Saturday as this years title race is shaping up to be the closest and hardest fought for many years. Championship leader 125 Hitler is booked in as well as 82 Wayne Quinn, 898 Andy Battle, 364 Sean Winchester, 439 Danny Sutton, 370 John Cobbold and 761 Nat Cohn who currently join him in the top 10.

Will 617 Jack Overy return this weekend?

Although the Suffolk Open may not attract as many visiting drivers as other unlimited meetings around the country there are still plenty of them coming this weekend including what is almost a mini-invasion from Incarace including some of the biggest names from the Midlands. How will they fare on the Suffolk shale.

After winning the Bandit Memorial at King's Lynn on June 21 and the final at Mildenhall on June 28, can 898 Andy Battle win his first major title and make it three final wins from four weekends?

One of the things which makes the Mildenhall unlimited so special is that you get so many drivers race who are not well known for racing big cars. Well done to the likes of 761 Nat Cohn, 415 Scott and 455 Luke Cornish, 370 John Cobbold, 46 Wayne Packer, 54 Martin Lawton, 178 Paul Robinson and 217 Neil Smyth for getting cars for this meeting and in many cases it will be their first taste of unlimited banger action.

Another driver making his unlimited banger debut is 362 Liam Friel. A year ago he won the Ministox Suffolk Open title and now he is in at the deep end in the unlimited bangers as he continues to impress at Mildenhall.

Defending champion 814 Mark Millen is one of the latest drivers to book in for this weekend but is he bringing a car likely to win him the title for a second year or is he feeding his hunger for racing material.

We hope you will enjoy the special 20 page programme dedicated to the meeting this Saturday. Once again this is a part of our effort to bring you the best value for money entertainment in the country and the programme is included in the admission prices. It’s just £11 for adults and £5 for concessions and if you are bringing the kids, why not bring their friends and take advantage of our excellent value for money family ticket which costs just £27. Nowhere else in the sport will you find value for money like this.

Finally if you are coming a long way this weekend to join us Saturday why not stay the night and make a weekend of it. There is greyhound racing at the stadium on Friday night at 7.30pm and the Mildenhall Fen Tiger speedway team take on the Stoke Potters in premier league speedway action on Sunday at 4.30pm.
