The age old saying that size matters and bigger is better will certainly be the case this Saturday night (July 12) at Mildenhall Stadium, West Row, Suffolk as the stadium plays host to a big night of big banger racing and the annual unlimited banger Suffolk Open Championship.
With a week to go to the big night over 120 banger drivers are currently booked in for the evening with drivers from all across the country set to head to the raceway for the event which is now regarded as one of the top banger events anywhere in the country and one of the few unlimited cc banger meetings in the sport which regularly attracts a triple figure entry of cars.
And the unlimited cc tag, truly means that as for one night only on the Suffolk shaleway the drivers are not only permitted but encouraged to find the biggest and baddest cars they possibly can and this one has a reputation for delivering some stunning cars and this year should be no different with the promise of some exceptional cars including limos, hearses, American Yank tanks, Rolls Royces, Jaguars, Rovers, classic Austins and much much more.
This is one of the few meetings of the year where the emphasis of the night isn't always on the race winners and in many ways the night isn't all about the crashers and entertainers but also about the quality of cars in the pits before hand so make sure you arrive in plenty of time before the start to ensure amble time to have a wander around the pit area before start time and to enjoy the grand parade of unlimited bangers at around 6.30pm, one final opportunity to see these wonderful cars before they go out in a true blaze of glory.
And if previous unlimited Suffolk Open championships at Mildenhall are anything to go by then there should be no shortage of action with recent events being not only rated as among the best banger events of the year at the Suffolk raceway but also among the best seen anywhere in the country.
Sadly the second half of last years event was spoiled by heavy rain but still the action came wich just a handful of the near 40 starters in the title race lasting the distance where Sittingbourne's Mark Millen (814) took a famous win in his classic Wolseley 6/110.
It's a star studded line up for this years meeting and the majority of the seasons track championship contenders are expected in action including series leader Lee Overy (125) from Beck Row alongside Mildenhall's Wayne Quinn (82), Andy Battle (898) from Saxmundham who is gunning for his third banger final win in four weeks, British Champion Sean Winchester (364) from Rainham, Supreme Champion Danny Sutton (439) from Yarmouth, rising star John Cobbold (370) from Colchester and Dover's John Reeves (188) who has thus far been one of the most committed banger races this season.
Another to watch out for must be former World Champion and local hero Dave Vincent (22) who has had a somewhat rotten season thus far and would love nothing more than to win this title to turn his year around and the unlimited format is certainly his favoured option when it comes to banger racing.
On the action front you can almost guarantee the Predators from Wisbech will be well involved as they return to Mildenhall after a series of hard hitting performances all around the country and they have assembled a very tasty line up of machinery for the big night, cars which they will be displaying at the annual Wisbech Steam Rally during the weekend, displaying the cars on Saturday afternoon before the meeting and then taking them back on the Sunday to show visitors what destruction they have inflicted.
They are not the only team expected to make an impact with the WI Engineering squad from Essex aiming to wield some stunning cars for the night and put them to good use.
Lots of visiting drivers are expected to make the trip including west country star Steve Bailey (190) who won the coveted most devastating driver award last year and few would bet against him winning that again in 2008.
Joining the bangers on the bill are the 11 to 16 year old stars of the future in the Ministox class and the young guns will also be racing for their Suffolk Open Championship, which is one of the biggest races of the season for the formula at the raceway and practically guarantees top action from these budding racers.
Last year's winner, Liam Friel (362) from London reached the formula's retirement age and is expected in action in the bangers this weekend leaving the door open for a new champion to be crowned.
Reigning RDC Drivers Champion Kyle Overy (370) from Mildenhall was the runner up last year and will be gunning to go one better while former Suffolk Open champion Wes Freestone (340) from King's Lynn will be looking to reclaim the title as he looks to extend his lead at the top of the track championship.
Currently second in the series is Jack Foster (382) from Newark who would love nothing more than to add another title to his growing collection as he attempts to reel in Freestone in the track championship race.
Other contenders include rising star Matt Noughton (366), former Suffolk Open Champion Craig Upson (381), final winner last month Jo Annison (314) and Thomas Parrin (350) who is another who has made great strides in the formula.
The first race is at 7pm with a grand parade of unlimited bangers at around 6.30pm.
