it was a pretty good turnout. Plus, some of the buildings near to the track have been demolished to make more space for cars, so maybe the Xmas meet will have a lot more drivers than 2008's!
Carwise, there were about 30 cars, with 7 Mob and 7 Levellers, along with visitors from Buxton and 218 Rob Speak. It wasn't all Mondeos either; a lot of variety with 14 Willy Walmsley bringing out a Rover 200, a lot of Jap material (mainly Bluebirds and Primeras) and a few Vauxhalls, with 19 from Buxton's Northern Mongs having an Astra Estate. Top cars were the Cortinas of 199 Jonathon Scully and 186 Alex Duncan (correct me if I've got the name wrong), in saloon and estate form respectively, although the saloon didn't come out.
First heat was lively indeed, with 272 Nessy rolling it after catching the humps on the top bend, causing 19, 218 and 293 John Willy Patten to get caught up in the carnage followed by 30 Dougie Roberts getting rolled after being wedged in between two Levellers on the pit bend. The rolling lap after this restart featured the hit of the meeting with a follow-in into the pit bend on 200 Lee Carmichael by 687 Steve Spence, with the former's Sierra Sapphire becoming a totally warped mess. Sparky won this one, although Speak wasn't happy with the commentator calling him a big girl for getting the tractor to tow his car onto the infield!
Second heat was less lively than the first, but still had some good bits with 186 being destroyed on the top bend and a sort of Mob-Levellers train with 455 Ako being done by 203 Russ McBain before 55 did the latter. Rob Speak got the win in this heat.
Final was also ok, with the main highlight being 16 Rob Howard giving a hard shot to 808 Tosh Tyson on the back straight. However, it had Nessy doing Dougie dangerously on the passenger side, and the grass-cutting still happened by some drivers, although it was said during that the centre green is now a safe area for drivers, so a little more enforcement on this to stop anymore grass cutting would be good. Speak won this as well.
DD had 6 cars: 5 Levellers and Dougie, with Levellers doing Dougie first before wrecking each other, mainly on the top bend. 203 did 808 hard, and 385 Toddy gave a good head-on to 300 Dan Kirkbride before 688 Wayne Morphet pushed Toddy around the top end of the track and got him stuck on the infield section of the back straight.
One thing I've always stressed about Barford is that it rarely fails to disappoint, and it didn't today, although for a brilliant 2 Litre meeting, they should host a team meeting with prizes for best presented, best wreck, most entertaining, etc., and not just cash for winning races.
Also, get well soon to F2 driver 294 Sean Tilley who got a foot injury in one of the F2 races today.
