FIREFIGHTERS were today on 24- hour alert over fears that a massive factory blaze could spark an explosion.
Firefighters were told Salthouse Mills, in Barrow, contained a number of gas cylinders, including three containing highly dangerous gas acetylene.
More than 30 frantic calls from concerned members of the public were made to emergency services and Barrow Fire Station during the evening.
Crews arrived at the Mills at around 9.15pm, where they identified the explosion risk. A fire crew from Barrow remained at the scene this morning.
The building, which has been badly damaged by the blaze, is being monitored for the next 24 hours due to the acetylene explosion risk.
Barrow Fire Station crew manager Steve Harrison said: “We were aware that the building was being used to store gas cylinders and obviously that meant there was a risk of explosion. When we arrived at the scene the building was well alight.”
The fire crew’s main concern was the cylinders inside the building.
Mr Harrison said: “When you arrive at a fire like that, acetylene is always something you have to be very careful about.
“That is the real danger. There was a distinct possibility of it exploding.
“My immediate reaction was to call for assistance to try and put the fire out.”
A 40-strong team of firefighters from crews from Dalton, Ulverston and Windermere were called to join the nine-hour operation to extinguish the fire. Barrow police told a crowd of people watching the blaze to move 10 metres away.
As there was no immediate supply of water near to the building, crews had to use water from Cavendish Dock and a nearby beck.
Last night, smoke from the fire billowed over the skies across Roose and Barrow town centre.
Eyewitness Laura Williams, 19, of Salthouse Road was at home when the fire broke out.
She said: “You could see what was happening out of the window. The police were not allowing any cars to get up my street. There was smoke everywhere, it was really thick and black. There was a strong smell of smoke for hours, it is still there now.
“We closed our windows and doors.”
The building was being used as a storage space for family-run business Salthouse Mills Skip Hire. Two skip vans and a JCB were destroyed by the blaze.
William Walmsley, who runs the business with his brother, said: “I have been down this morning and everything is gone.
“There is nothing left.
“We are all gutted about it, really. The firefighters did everything they could, but there was not a lot they could do because the fire spread in the building so quickly.”
Last night’s blaze is the latest in a string of fires at the industrial estate.
An investigation is today underway to attempt to establish the cause.
Mr Harrison said: “I am unaware if the police are involved in the investigation at this stage, but there have been several fires at Salthouse Mills lately, but none quite as large-scale as last night’s fire.”
No one was injured.
